Welcome to Warsaw in Mexico City, a project led by a CliMates member, Sébastien Burguess! Read below how he introduces us the birth of the project...
COPinMyCity DF was born out of the reflexions which took place during the Bogota Workshops in September 2013. Aside from the creation of CLIC (Jovenes LAyC frente al Cambio Climatico), several of the participants pledged to participate in the global CopInMyCity inititiative. Four Mexican participants: Danae Espinoza, Edgar Lemus, Jaime Granillo and Sébastien Burgess went back to Mexico and set out to organize the Mexican chapter of CopInMyCity with the help of Jessica Almeraya.
The organization team feels it is crucial to contribute to climate-change awareness which is lacking in Mexico: a country that has been battered by extreme weather events in recent years and which faces tremendous adaptation challenges for the coming decades. Mexico is also becoming an emerging player on the climate scene through its ambitious domestic climate policies but also for its emissions of GHG that are set to rise as the country continues on a path of stable economic growth. For these reasons, we felt that COP-19 in Warsaw was a fantastic opportunity to organize a set of events in Mexico City and elsewhere to raise these issues which too often get ignored in Mexico. With the help of distinguished guests, we seek to discuss about the history of COPs, the challenges at Warsaw and looking forward to the Peru and Paris conferences, the latest findings of the 5th IPCC report and the mitigation and adaptation challenges facing Mexico.
Joining CopInMyCity was crucial in helping us with the support we needed to organize the logistics of the events, share common practices and join a global network of passionate climate warriors eager to change the current paradigm.
